Understanding Ford’s PATS System
Every Ford key since 1996 contains a transponder chip that communicates with Ford’s Passive Anti Theft System, commonly known as PATS or SecuriLock. This is something unique to Ford that can save you money if you already have two working keys and want to add a third.
On many Ford models from 1996 to 2014, the PATS system allows an on board programming sequence. You insert working key one, turn the ignition on for a few seconds, remove it, insert working key two, turn the ignition on, remove it, then insert the new blank key within a timed window. The PATS module recognizes the two authenticated keys and accepts the third.
This method only works if you have at least two existing working keys and your Ford supports it. It does not work on most 2015 and newer models with Intelligent Access. If you have only one key or zero keys, professional OBD II programming is required.
