The Nissan Altima and Rogue are two of the most common cars in Duval County. We handle Nissan key jobs daily across Jacksonville. Here is what your specific model needs and what to expect.
Understanding the Nissan Intelligent Key System
Nissan’s smart key system is called the Intelligent Key. It handles keyless entry, push button start, and trunk release through a single proximity fob. The car detects the fob wirelessly when you approach, unlocks when you pull the door handle, and starts when you press the ignition button with your foot on the brake.
A hidden emergency key blade is tucked inside every Intelligent Key fob. This blade can manually unlock the driver’s door if the fob battery dies. Most Nissan owners do not know it exists until they need it.
The Intelligent Key system registers up to four fobs per vehicle. When we program a new fob, we reprogram all your existing fobs in the same session to prevent any from being accidentally erased from the system.
Nissan Key Types by Model and Year
Basic Transponder Chip Key (2000 to 2006)
A standard metal key with a transponder chip in the plastic head. No remote buttons on the key itself. A separate small fob handles lock and unlock.
Models: Altima (2000 to 2006), Sentra (2000 to 2006), Frontier (2001 to 2004), Xterra (2000 to 2004), Pathfinder (2001 to 2004).
Chip type: Nissan 46 chip.
Cost: $89 to $120 including cutting and programming.
Remote Head Key (2005 to 2020)
The key blade and remote buttons are combined into one unit. These use the Nissan 46 chip on older models and the Nissan 4D chip on later models.
Models: Altima (2005 to 2012 on base S trim), Sentra (2007 to 2019), Rogue (2008 to 2021 on base S trim), Frontier (2005 to 2021), Pathfinder (2005 to 2012), Xterra (2005 to 2015).
Cost: $120 to $170 including cutting and programming.
PIN code note: Many Nissan models require a dealer level PIN code to be retrieved before the transponder can be programmed. This PIN is specific to your vehicle and must be obtained through the manufacturer’s database using your VIN. We have the tools and access to retrieve this PIN on site. Not all locksmiths do.
Nissan Intelligent Key Fob (2007 to Present)
The proximity fob for push to start vehicles. No key insertion needed. The fob stays in your pocket and the car handles everything wirelessly.
Models: Altima (2007+ on SV and higher trims, 2019+ on all trims), Rogue (2014+ on SV and higher trims, 2021+ on all trims), Sentra (2020+), Maxima (2007+), Pathfinder (2013+), Murano (2009+), Titan (2016+), Kicks (2018+).
Chip type: Nissan HITAG 2 (older) or HITAG AES 128 bit (2019+).
Cost: $170 to $250 including programming.
Starting with the 2019 model year, Nissan upgraded to 433 MHz frequency and AES 128 bit encryption on the Altima, followed by the Sentra, Rogue, and other models in 2020 and 2021. This newer encryption requires updated programming equipment. We carry it.
Nissan Models We Service Most in Jacksonville
Nissan Altima
The Altima is one of the most common sedans in Jacksonville. Popular with commuters, rideshare drivers, and families. The key system varies significantly across model years. A 2005 to 2012 base model Altima uses a simple remote head key ($120 to $160). A 2019 or newer Altima uses the latest Intelligent Key with AES encryption ($190 to $250). Knowing your exact year and trim matters.
Nissan Rogue
The Rogue is Nissan’s best selling vehicle nationwide and is everywhere in Jacksonville. We see Rogues daily in Mandarin, Southside, Arlington, and the Beaches. The Rogue used a remote head key on the base S trim through 2020 and the Intelligent Key on SV and higher trims from 2014 onward. The 2021 redesign brought the Intelligent Key to all trims.
Nissan Sentra
A budget friendly sedan popular with students at UNF, FSCJ, and Jacksonville University, and with first time car buyers across Duval County. The Sentra used a remote head key through 2019. The 2020 redesign switched all trims to the Intelligent Key system.
Nissan Pathfinder
A mid size SUV common among families in Jacksonville’s suburban neighborhoods. The Pathfinder has used the Intelligent Key since 2013. Older models (2005 to 2012) use the remote head key.
Nissan Frontier
The Frontier is a mid size truck popular with outdoor enthusiasts and trades workers in Jacksonville. Unlike most Nissan models, the Frontier kept the remote head key system through its 2021 redesign. Some 2022 and newer Frontier trims now offer the Intelligent Key.
The “Key Not Detected” Problem
This is the most common issue Nissan owners call us about, and it does not always mean you need a new key.
Check the Fob Battery First
The Nissan Intelligent Key uses a CR2032 battery. In Jacksonville’s heat, these batteries die faster than the rated 2 to 3 year lifespan. If your Nissan says “key not detected” or “no key detected,” a dead or weak battery is the cause about 60 to 70 percent of the time.
Replace the battery and test. If the car detects the fob again, you just saved yourself a service call.
Emergency Start With a Dead Fob
If the battery is completely dead and you cannot get in the car, use the hidden emergency blade inside the fob to manually unlock the driver’s door. Then place the dead fob directly against the start button (or on some models, against a designated spot on the steering column) and press the brake and start button simultaneously. The backup reader should detect the fob’s chip at close range and start the car.
Fob De-Synchronization
Nissan released a Technical Service Bulletin (KS16-015D / NTB16-028D) covering Intelligent Key de-synchronization on 2015 to 2021 models including the Altima, Rogue, Sentra, Maxima, Pathfinder, and Titan. If the fob has not been used for an extended period or the battery ran dead before being replaced, the fob can lose sync with the vehicle. Re-synchronization requires professional equipment. We handle this on site.
Interference From Other Keys
If you carry multiple Intelligent Keys on the same keyring or in the same pocket, they can interfere with each other. Some Nissan models struggle to detect the correct fob when more than one is in range. Try isolating the fob and testing it alone before assuming it has failed.
Nissan Dealership vs Locksmith: Price Comparison
| Key Type | Dealership Price | Our Price | You Save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transponder chip key (2000 to 2006) | $150 to $250 | $89 to $120 | $60 to $130 |
| Remote head key (2005 to 2020) | $200 to $325 | $120 to $170 | $80 to $155 |
| Intelligent Key fob (2007+) | $250 to $450 | $170 to $250 | $80 to $200 |
One important note about Nissan dealerships: if your vehicle is older than 10 years, Nissan dealers may no longer have the key code on file. In that case, the dealership has to decode the lock or order a code retrieval, which adds time and cost. We retrieve key codes on site regardless of vehicle age using OBD II data and VIN lookup tools.
Frequently Asked Questions: Nissan Keys Jacksonville
How much does a Nissan key cost in Jacksonville?
$89 to $250 depending on model year and key type. Basic transponder keys start at $89. Intelligent Key fobs for newer models run $170 to $250. Full price quoted on the phone.
My Nissan says “key not detected.” Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. Replace the CR2032 fob battery first. This fixes the problem about 60 to 70 percent of the time. If a new battery does not work, call us to diagnose whether the fob needs reprogramming, re-synchronization, or replacement.
What is the PIN code and do I need it for Nissan key programming?
Many Nissan models require a manufacturer PIN code before a new transponder key can be programmed. This PIN is specific to your VIN. We have the tools and manufacturer database access to retrieve it on site. Not all locksmiths can do this.
Can you make a key for an older Nissan if the dealer no longer has the code?
Yes. We retrieve key codes using OBD II diagnostics and VIN lookup tools regardless of vehicle age. The dealer’s 10 year code retention limit does not affect us.
Can I program a Nissan Intelligent Key myself?
No. Nissan’s Intelligent Key system requires professional OBD II programming equipment and manufacturer security access. There is no self programming procedure for Nissan fobs.
Where is the hidden emergency key blade in my Nissan fob?
Look for a small release latch or slider on the back or bottom of the fob. Press or slide it, and a thin metal key blade will pop out. This blade opens the driver’s door manually. It does not start the engine, but it gets you inside the car.
